Heed the tips below to prevent wrinkles like these!

Like it or not, we live in a world where we are often judged by our looks, and a youthful appearance translates not only in to more social success, but a better paycheck!   Wrinkled and mottled skin is associated with old age ; smooth, supple skin with youth.Since  it truly does pay to look good, let’s go over how to both prevent, and treat, wrinkled skin.

Top 10 Tips for Preventing Wrinkles

1). Don’t smoke!  Studies of twin siblings clearly show how much loss of elasticity, wrinkling and sallowness of the skin is associated with cigarette smoking.

2). Stay out  of the sun!   Learn how to choose the best sunscreen products, and use them every day of the year.  UVA light travels through window glass , and causes irregular brown splotching of the skin.  Check out long distance truck drivers, and note how much  dark pigment and sagging is seen on the left side of their faces.  Use La Roche Posay Anthelios sunscreen products that contain mexoryl ,the best UVA protector. Tinted titanium dioxide lotions are also excellent.  Fallene  Cotz, EltaMD, Revision Intellishade all contain physical blockers, zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide that shield you from UVA.

3).  Avoid alcohol and  carbohydrates.   Diets high in alcohol and carbs are known to fuel inflammation, which damages many tissues, including skin.  Eat well, choosing good fats from nuts and fish, or take fish or flax oil supplements.  Heliocare, an oral herbal capsule containing polypodeum leucotomos, is an anti-oxidant known to reduce the damage from sun exposure.

4). Choose your parents wisely!   Ok, this isn’t a variable we can modulate, but genetics play a large role in how well we age.

5). Live well and exercise. Enjoy your life, smile more, move!  Spending time with friends, and even when smiling when you don’t “feel” it , all help to release natural endorphins that give us a healthier glow to our skin.

You’ve done all the above, and still are facing the fine lines creeping in around your eyes and mouth. What to do?  Here are some treatment options.

6) Retinoids. These are Vitamin A products with some of the best scientific evidence for wrinkle reduction.  Try prescription Renova, Refissa, Retin-A, or non-prescription versions such as Roc Retinol, Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair, Vichy Lift-Activ Retinol Refining Cream.

RoC Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Night Cream contains retinoids in an over the counter product to aid in reducing the appearance of wrinkles.

7). Peptides. Some of the best include Olay Regenerist, Strivectin, Kinerase C8 peptide,as  well as Avon’s  Anew.

Kinerase C8 Peptide Intensive Treatment contains peptides which have been shown to reduce wrinkles.

8). Botox. A more dramatic fix than the peptides, Botox injections can help the initial smoothing of the wrinkles, and peptides used in conjunction will help keep you smoother longer.

Botox injections can help the initial smoothing of the wrinkle, but the results aren’t permanent. Peptide treatment in conjunction with botox can help.

9). Pulsed light, laser treatment. The technology is dizzying, and improving almost daily.  If money is no object, this can jump-start your improvement, but don’t ignore the other tips!

10). Fillers. Brands like Juvederm, Restylane, Radiesse, Artefill, and others are the only quick fix for very deep wrinkles, and have to be administered by injection periodically by an experienced injector.

While prevention is always the best approach, improving one’s skin through the above tips is possible, at any price point.  It is never too early to start!
